End o' week musings

Boy! Do I ever need to get some sleep! But then, I'm not dead yet...

Last Friday I headed out to the Dockside in West Covina to catch The Subs offering up their solid and fun sets of rock, R&B, soul, blues and all sorts of stuff in between.

On Saturday I visited Bluebeard at the rehearsal studio. The group was hot in the late '70s and early '80s and has managed to garner a bit of a comeback. They've updated their classic rock sound a tad and are quite kind to the ear, as well as banging enough for the head. I urge you to catch these boyz live.

After that, I went out to the CD release party for The Safety Girls. This quartet is not only cute and perky, but they can sing and dance too. They put out tunes on safety subjects for children with tight harmonies and music that won't become annoying to parents who may have to listen to it over and over.

I ended my evening by stopping in at the Buccaneer in Sierra Madre to see Jo Jo's Boxcar. They had the joint rockin' and closed the place out with a full crowd hankering for more.

Sunday I went to a belly dance party and shook my groove thing. I also bought a cool copper coin belt that jingles even when you're standing still-- just wait for my shimmies!!

Monday, Ernest Borgnine was at the South Pasadena Public Library, so I took a drive and went out to see him. I brought along his autobiography and waited in a super long line for him to sign it. What a slice of history he is! And a treasure to Hollywood....

The remainder of my week has been filled with dance practices, as we're preparing for a slew of gigs in the coming weeks, including this weekend... but I'll get to that.

Tonight I'm going to go to the Pasadena Playhouse to see the new musical, "Vanities."

Saturday I'm taking part one of artist Dave Lovejoy's Raku class. I will be learning how to work a pottery wheel and then running off to get gussied up and back out for the Metal Masters Tour in Devore. I can hardly wait to see Heaven and Hell, Judas Priest, Motorhead and Testament!!

On Sunday I will be performing. Here's the skinny, should you want to catch my act:

Sunday Salon
Noon-dusk Sunday, Aug. 31
Performance 3 p.m.
~ Group show and sale of work by emerging & established artists ~
Free
McGinty's Gallery at the End of the World

Monday I'm heading into the studio to record backups for a friend's album...

Sleep... oh no, not me... Perhaps next Friday I can sleep in. It will be my birthday, so that would be a great present.

Photos we got 'em: Just a couple of pet pics that made me smile.

In rotation this week: Tom Petty, Wicked Tinkers, Tribe of Gypsies, Orange Sky, Judas Priest, Joe Walla, The Offspring, Motley Crue and Sound and Fury.

Thought of the week: Let it be. You can't force things to be how you want, like making someone love you or getting someone to do things the way you think they should be done. You can only plant the seed and nurture it. Keep reaching out, even if you are not embraced. Keep talking and supporting, even if you are met with silence. Keep loving, not expecting anything in return. A little more of this would make the world a better place and, perhaps, you will eventually get what you need.
Keep on rockin'

Street Dogs' Mike McColgan to sing national anthem Tuesday

Punk rock veteran and avid baseball fan, Mike McColgan, will sing the national anthem at Dodger Stadium on September 2nd in celebration of country and as a kick-off of sorts for the Street Dogs’ upcoming US Tour.

The Boston transplant, who recently wrapped up a phenomenal main stage run on the Vans Warped Tour with the rest of the Street Dogs, will hit the road again this fall for a headlining US tour, which will include highly anticipated performances at the House of Blues in Anaheim on October 17th and the House of Blues in West Hollywood on October 18th.

For McColgan, nothing is more important than family and country, which is reflected eloquently in his lyrics. Having served his country in the Gulf War as well as his community as a Boston fire fighter, McColgan draws on his life experiences to create passionate, rousing music that speaks to the common person. On the group’s critically acclaimed new album, State of Grace, McColgan showcases his uncanny ability to stir up emotions with tracks like the heartfelt tributes to his late uncle “Kevin J. O’Toole” and grandmother “Elizabeth,” the awakening anti-war anthems “Into The Valley” and “Guns,” and perhaps his most personal song yet, “Free.”

Street Dogs are rounded out by a boisterous lineup that includes Johnny Rioux (bass), Marcus Hollar (guitar), Tobe Bean III (guitar) and Paul Rucker (drums), who provide fist-pumping music, chock-full of rebellious rock riffs and marching beats on songs like “Mean Fist” and “Two Angry Kids.”

Known widely for their dynamic live shows, which have packed venues across the US, Street Dogs’ performances on this summer’s Warped Tour were a warm-up to the punk rock extravaganza happening this fall.

Catch McColgan give a rare performance of the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 2nd.

Hootie leaves the Blowfish

Hootie has flown the coop -- at least for now -- according to Hootie & the Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker.

"Hootie played our last show last night for years," Rucker told PopEater on Wednesday during a taping for AOL Music Sessions. The final concert took place at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, Calif. "We have four charity gigs that we do every year and will still do every year. But we will not do a record or tour for five or six years ... until I do three or four country records."

"Even when we play now, we're not as close as we were," Darius Rucker told us about Hootie. "I don't miss the getting big or all that stuff, I miss when we were real close The struggle was the fun part."

Rucker is an out-of-the-box success at country radio. His first single, the bittersweet "Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It" is No. 5 at country radio this week. His country debut CD, "Learn to Live," comes out Sept. 16 on Capitol Nashville.

As he starts over as a country artist, Rucker says it’s the nascent days with his Blowfish band mates that he misses when he looks back at the group’s tremendous success. "I miss when the four of us were riding in the van and we were the four best friends in the world," he says. "We were inseparable … We grew up and grew apart and got married and had kids. Even when we play now, we’re not as close as we were. I don’t miss the getting big or all that stuff, I miss when we were real close…The struggle was the fun part."

And if fans still want to call Rucker "Hootie," that’s fine by him. "After being in the limelight for 15 years, you're just glad that people still know who you are ... especially since I've lost weight and I'm not a fat hippie anymore. [laughs] So if people still know who I am, that's a good thing!"

Look for the AOL Music Sessions on Sept. 16.

John Oates solo effort due out Sept. 23

For John Oates, longtime member of music’s best-selling duo of all time Daryl Hall & John Oates, his second solo album, 1000 Miles of Life, scheduled for release on September 23rd on PS Records in association with U-Watch/DKE Records and distributed by ICON Music Entertainment Services, was a labor of love and devotion, a summary of his three decades as a professional musician. Amazon.com will have an exclusive digital version of 1000 Miles of Life starting on September 9th up until the September 23rd street date, when it will become available in all digital and retail outlets.

“It was a wake-up call for me,” says John about the album, his second solo effort and first since 2002’s Phunk Shui. “After 30-plus years devoting myself to my art and craft, I needed to make a musical statement that someday I could look back on and realize, at that moment of time, I did exactly what I wanted to do. I’ve never written songs like this. I was on this inspirational roll. There was an urgency to it. I realized that I had no more time in my life for rehearsals… and I took that energy into the studio.”

John dedicates the album to three inspired individuals who had recently passed away, but were major influences in his career—producer Arif Mardin (who produced Hall & Oates’ first two albums on Atlantic Records), Jerry Lynn Williams (a writer who contributed songs to Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and B.B. King, among others) and his original guitar mentor Jerry Ricks, who introduced him to the roots blues/folk scene in Philadelphia in the late 60s.

To prepare for the album, Oates traveled to Nashville and hooked up with veteran engineer Bil VornDick (“The guy had the keys to every studio in town,” marvels John). It was Bil’s recording technique for acoustic instruments that gives the record the airy quality reminiscent of classic albums from the past. The next step was to bring in the crème de la crème of the city’s session players, including bluegrass legends Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas and Sam Bush, “I wanted players who knew how to frame a song,” says John, “Who knew how to take a lyric and enhance it.”

Co-produced by John with Jed Leiber, son of legendary songwriter Jerry Leiber, the album features eight orginal new songs, most of which were written this past year. In addition, there is an outstanding version of the Jerry Lynn Williams’ classic “Sending Me Angels” perfomed with the Blind Boys of Alabama as well as John’s interpretation of Daniel Lanois’ “Sometimes”. The new songs are complimented by the beautiful ballad, “I Found Love,” a folky ballad he wrote for his wife in 1993 as well as a new take on “Change of Season” originally recorded in the late 1980s.

Among the new tracks listen to “Ghost Town,” inspired by his visit to a post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, this standout track with its atmospheric, cinematic feel, is a highlight of 1000 Miles of Life, featuring a plaintive banjo solo by Fleck, Blues Traveler’s John Popper on harp and an eerie New Orleans funeral march coda which seems to arise right out of the mist.

“When I went to the city, we got a chance to hang out in those neighborhoods destroyed by the hurricane,” says John. “I was shocked and embarrassed by the fact that two years later, a major American city could be left in that state of chaos. That really affected me. People losing their city but not losing their heart.”

Some of the other guests on the album include The Blind Boys of Alabama (“Sending Me Angels”), John Popper, (“Ghost Town”) Bekka Bramlett (“Carved in Stone”) and her mom Bonnie Bramlett of Delaney and Bonnie fame (“1000 Miles of Life”) as well as legendary guitarist Steve Cropper, longtime Hall & Oates band member T Bone Wolk, Jed Leiber on keyboards, string meister Jonathan Yudkin, bassists Michael Rhodes and Mark Fain, pedal steel and electric guitarist Dan Dugmore, drummers Doug Belote, Chad Cromwell and Shannon Forrest, percussionist Eric Darken, guitarists Tom and Bob Britt as well as Nathan Paul Chapman. Basic tracks were recorded in Nashville, vocals and guitars were laid down at Great Divide Studios in Aspen and the album was mixed back in L.A. at Leiber’s Nightbird Studios at The Sunset Marquis.

“I did everything on blind faith and gut feeling, but it worked like a charm,” says John. “The project began to take on this incredible momentum. There was a creative energy that carried the project through. Every musician dedicated themselves to these songs. It was the most effortless, joyful, inspirational playing I’ve experienced since recording Abandoned Luncheonette. There was a special chemistry… a special moment in time.”

Now that it’s finished, Oates is confident the process of recording a solo album will only enhance the music he makes with Hall and Oates.

“Doing this album is good for both of us,” he says. “When we do come back together, we bring those experiences to what we do, which makes it even better. But this is a very personal record for me and, without a doubt, the highlight of my recording career.”

Scars on Broadway add tour dates

Scars on Broadway has added more dates to their first-ever North American tour, including one in their hometown of Los Angeles. Guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan, joined by guitarist Franky Perez, keyboardist Danny Shamoun and bassist Dominic Cifarelli, will headline L.A.'s Avalon Ballroom on Tuesday, November 18, followed by the House of Blues in Anaheim on Wednesday, November 19, and then the House of Blues in San Diego on Friday, November 21. The six week, cross-country trek kicks off October 19 in Atlanta, GA (full itinerary below), and is in support of the band's self-titled debut album which was released on July 29 (Interscope).

For complete information regarding on-sale dates and the purchase of tickets, log onto www.scarsonbroadway.com

Coinciding with the North American tour, Scars on Broadway just finished a new music video for the track "World Long Gone," The "World Long Gone" video was directed by the award-winning Joel Schumacher who directed major motion pictures including the Brat Pack classic "St. Elmo's Fire," as well as "The Lost Boys," John Grishman's "The Client" and "A Time to Kill," the cardiac thriller "Flatliners," and the controversial drama "Falling Down" starring Michael Douglas. The video was shot last week at a desolate Southern California desert location, near Vasquez Rocks in Agua Dulce, where countless feature films and television series have been shot, including "Star Trek," "Planet of the Apes," "Twilight Zone," and "24." The video also has a cameo appearance by supermodel Jessica Miller.

Scars on Broadway's Malakian and Dolmayan have made their share of provocative videos with their multi-Platinum, Grammy-winning band System of a Down, and the new Scars video will be no different. Scars and Schumacher made the decision to eschew gimmicks, flashy wardrobes and facades for this video, instead choosing to illustrate the "simple man" and his feelings of disconnection. Through their website, the band invited a dozen or so of their fans to be in the video as "travelers and drifters." By the video's conclusion, it is hoped that the audience will see the inevitable interconnection between us all through our lifestyles and life decisions. The "World Long Gone" video is expected to have its premiere in September.

With the new video safely in the can, Scars on Broadway have traveled to Europe where they have just kicked off their headline tour that will include a few major festivals.

Stop in at One Sunset

Shared plates, creative cocktails and a restaurant that morphs into a lounge as the evening evolves make One Sunset the ultimate one-stop destination for a perfect night out on the Sunset Strip. The popular lounge has evolved its menu with Chef Jason Marcus, added new cocktails, weekly entertainment and introduced One Sunset Fridays hosted by Hollywood Entertainment Group with Pretty Boy Promotions to create a supper club and lounge atmosphere like nothing else in Los Angeles.

While One Sunset has embraced its roots by keeping to the design of shared tasting plates, Chef Jason Marcus brings his own flair to the menu by adding a number of new items to the menu. In a twist on the Japanese concept of okomase “I am in your hands”--guests can now sit back and enjoy the full measure of Chef Jason Marcus’ expertise by choosing “One of Almost Everything” from the menu. New to One Sunset and to a fusion menu generally, “One of Everything” picks various items from the menu while tailoring the amount of food to the number of guests in the party.

One Sunset Fridays welcomes the team of Hollywood Entertainment Group’s Devin Haman, Jeff Bozz and Alex Nicol with Pretty Boy Promotions’ Nic Goodwin and Jon Abrams. Following their successful launch August 15, the group has combined entertainment, celebrity and events to make Fridays the “Dinner and Dancing in One” destination at One Sunset. With a dance floor, complete dance lighting, DJ’s and a menu—served till 1:00AM—that lends itself to a supper club atmosphere, the night promises an energetic vibe that lasts until the early hours.

This Friday, August 29 features a birthday party for BENCH WARMER TRADING CARDS’ founder and CEO Brian Wallos and SUNSET TAN star Janae Alt and Molly Shea, Holly Huddleston and the entire cast of E’s Sunset Tan. With its signature low tables for mingling and relaxing, Daniel Maltzman’s fashionably modern art on the walls and newly added menu and drink options, One Sunset remains the hottest one-stop shop for Los Angeles nightlife.

“One Sunset is an evolving concept,” concludes One Group partner Erica Cohen “While we cherish the core concepts of One Sunset, we aim to both react to customers’ changing tastes by continually introducing something new, our regular customers will continue to enjoy all the things they love about One Sunset and that keep them coming back.”

Happy Bergh-Day to You!

In addition to helping to pass a much more effective anti-cruelty law for New York State, Bergh inspected slaughter houses and stables, lectured in schools, spoke out against dog fighting, horse racing and circuses, and supplied daily drinking water to the horses who pulled carts and streetcars in Manhattan. By the time of his death in 1888, humane societies had sprung up throughout the nation.

Thank you, Henry, and happy birthday!

“I honestly feel that Shudder is the best Bayside album that we have ever made,” explains vocalist/guitarist Anthony Raneri. “It's probably the most youthful and energetic of all of our records."

The track listing is as follows:

The Hollywood Palladium is currently undergoing a total renovation of all interior and exterior areas including a new dance floor, expanded concessions and upgraded restrooms. Sound experts are revamping the acoustic treatments on the inside of the building, which is expected to give concertgoers a much-improved listening experience. In-house event staff will provide for security with a decidedly more guest-friendly approach.

Please see the following for more details on this diverse lineup of shows:

GYM CLASS HEROES & THE ROOTS: Gym Class Heroes combine rap, alternative and funk into one bracingly original package. Their breakthrough 2006 debut, As Cruel As School Children, hit the Top 50 on the Billboard 200 and its eagerly-awaited follow-up, The Quilt, is set for release next month. This quartet also knows how to rock a stage with their mix of live instrumentation and looped beats. The Roots, renowned for their intelligent rhymes, tight musicianship and independent stance, are one of Hip-Hop’s most adventurous collectives, consistently raising the bar with each new release. They are currently supporting their latest acclaimed album, Rising Down, which hit Top 10 on the Billboard 200 as well as the Top 5 of the Top R&B/Hip Hop charts earlier this year.

FLOGGING MOLLY: This septet recalls the brash insolence of The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers dashed with a touch of The Pogues’ closing-time bluster. Their latest full-length, Float, opens another chapter in Flogging Molly’s sonic evolution. With hard-charging tunes such as, “Requiem For A Dying Song,” "Paddy's Lament" and "You Won't Make a Fool Out of Me," it promises to give the group their biggest chart impact yet. A killer live band, Flogging Molly have paid their dues on stage, and anthemic sing-alongs like, "Selfish Man,” "Drunken Lullabies," and "The Worst Day Since Yesterday" remain fan favorites.

THE KOOKS: The latest British Invasion contender is back. After 2006's Inside In/Inside Out drew a huge following worldwide thanks to the massive singles “She Moves In Her Own Way,” “You Don't Love Me,” and ”Naïve,” the Brighton quartet returns with their latest release Konk. It has already cracked the Top 50 of the Billboard Top 200 and features the new smash, “Shine On.” The group’s hook-laden alchemy has also led to sold-out shows around the world, including a packed Wiltern date earlier this summer.

RISE AGAINST: This Chicago-based melodic hardcore band refuses to follow any established music industry norm, yet their reach has grown organically from underground punk roots into a true alt-rock phenomenon. They broke through to a wider audience with 2004’s Siren Song of the Counter Culture, then their 2006 follow-up, The Sufferer and the Witness, hit the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, thanks to the singles “Prayer Of The Refugee” and “Good Left Undone.” This October, Rise Against will release their newest creation, the eagerly-awaited Appeal to Reason.

DRAGONFORCE: DragonForce have single-handedly revitalized power metal, awakening a long dormant genre thanks to their technical virtuosity, compositional skill and incendiary live shows. Their breakthrough full-length, Inhuman Rampage, gave listeners a taste of what they were capable of. Now, with a brand new album, Ultra Beatdown, they have pushed their music further than ever before. It takes listeners to new heights and reveals a band experimenting, taking risks, being bold – precisely what you’d expect of any masters of their art.

LA FABRIKA DEL REGGAETON: This special event will feature the smooth reggae, hip-hop and house sounds of La Factoria and Eddy Lover, plus special guests Mach & Daddy (“Pasame la Botella"), Makano, Aldo Ranks and JR. Ranks and much more. La Factoria’s club-friendly sound has earned them heavy international airplay. Their breakthrough single, "Perdóname," featured then-budding Reggaeton artist Eddy Lover and went on to spend over 40 weeks on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks. Lover’s current single, “Luna,” has reached the Top 50 on the same listing.

MUDVAYNE: The hard crushing metal quartet Mudvayne has sold more than 4.5 million units worldwide and each of their studio albums is certified gold. They are Grammy nominees, have garnered extensive radio and video airplay, were honored with the first-ever MTV2 Award and play hundreds of sold-out shows each year around the world. Their 2005 CD, Lost And Found, debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and their most recent release, By The People, For The People, created history by offering their fans the opportunity to vote on the tracks chosen for the collection. They are expected to have a new studio album out later this year.

ONEREPUBLIC: OneRepublic released their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, in 2007, quickly selling over 1 million copies worldwide and cracking the Top 20 on the Billboard 200. They broke sales records and genre boundaries with the Timbaland remix of their hit single "Apologize," which has sold in excess of 7 million singles worldwide. It was the biggest radio airplay smash in the history of Top 40 radio in North America and held the #1 position for five months. The band's follow up single, "Stop and Stare," has also crossed the 2 million mark in worldwide sales.

ALEJANDRA GUZMAN: Known as the “Queen of Rock En Espanol,” Latin Grammy Award winning singer/actress Alejandra Guzman is the daughter of superstar royalty— Mexican actress Silvia Pinal and rock star Enrique Guzman. She made her first TV appearance when she was just two months old. Guzman released her chart-topping debut album Bye Mama in 1988. Nearly two decades later, her 2006 release Indeleble hit Top 20 on the Top Latin Charts, illustrating her longevity and wide-ranging appeal. Alejandra’s latest recording, 2007’s Fuerza, includes the single "Soy Solo Un Secreto."

OF MONTREAL: A product of the Athens, Georgia alternative scene, fertile ground that has spawned groundbreaking acts like R.E.M. and the B52’s, of Montreal is the brainchild of Elephant Six veteran Kevin Barnes. While it began as a one-man studio operation, of Montreal now is a sprawling, neo-psychedelic cavalcade on stage. Its latest release, Hissing Fauna, swings widely from swaggering guitar to moody synths. It is also the most personal of Montreal album to date, with Barnes pouring tremendous amounts of emotion, heartbreak, frustration and elation into its twelve tracks.

SLIGHTLY STOOPID: With their latest release, the retrospective collection Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Yet Stoopid, San Diego’s Slightly Stoopid have distilled their infectious rock/reggae/rap mix to the core. The group has spent more than a decade treading the boards, both opening for the likes of Dave Matthews Band and Sublime plus headlining major venues in their own right. They have evolved into one of America’s most successful independent touring groups. Slightly Stoopid’s hypnotic “stealth groove” has also been featured in major TV shows such as “The OC,” and “North Shore.”

In addition to its legendary status as a prime live music destination, The Hollywood Palladium is also a versatile location for special events of all kinds. Walkmen touring in support of new album

The music that inspired the Walkmen to compose You and Me follows in a tradition of song writing that goes back to early rock 'n' roll: the intimacy and energy of Elvis Presley's and Buddy Holly's early recordings, and the massive voice and orchestration of Roy Orbison. And it carries on through people like Bob Marley and Randy Newman and on to bands like The Pogues and The Modern Lovers - the sort of songs that are very much a product of their time and place while firmly rooted in tradition.

The vocals were performed live right in the room with the full band, and sometimes a horn section too. With some romance and drama, You and Me harnesses a sense of classic live-band production into meticulously constructed, unique-sounding rock songs. The sound would definitely not be mistaken for old, but it would be impossible to ignore the most timeless influences.

You and Me offers a distinctive twist to the"Walkmen" sound of their first three records. Each song shows focus, and an up-beat enthusiasm apparent in all lyrics, music, and performances. It is a long record, clocking in at just under an hour, and it presents a wide range of ideas.

The pacing is very important, as the band felt it was essential to set the right tone, and show each song in its proper light. Writing and recording of You and Me happened over a vibrant and rigorous 2-year period, during which the members of The Walkmen were split between Philadelphia and New York. The band rode China Town busses five days a week to work in two small rehearsal spaces (an old nightclub in Chelsea, New York and a warehouse in Fish Town, Philadelphia) to freeze by the kerosene heater in the winter, and sweat it out in the summer. By the time of the record's pressing there were over four hundred cast-off 8-track tapes littering both spaces.

The song “I Lost You” was the first major breakthrough, and inspired many songs to follow. Maroon was teaching himself the viola and trumpet at the time, and the song was the culmination of many 8-track experiments. The new warmth and romance in the music seemed to beg for the same from the lyrics, so the cold and stand-offish tone that had run a-ground in recent years was abandoned for a more personal and real approach.

“I Lost You's” strange pacing, and the way in which both the music and the lyrics together pushed towards an Orbison-like crescendo, was the new direction everyone had hoped for. Songs like “Red Moon”, “On the Water”, “If Only it Were True”, and “In the New Year” were soon to follow.

The album was recorded in two installments - the first at Sweet Tea studios in Oxford, Mississippi (where they had worked on Bows and Arrows) with engineer John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Hold Steady, Sonic Youth) and in a couple of sessions in New York's Gigantic Studios (built by Phillip Glass) with engineer Chris Zane (who the boys consider "the best f@#king engineer in the world" and a "f@#king god-send"). You and Me is a solid and complex showcase of inspired songwriting. Romantic and celebratory, this is the sound of The Walkmen returning to classic form.

The End Of The World To Release Sophmore LP “French Exit”
Out November 11th On Flameshovel/Pretty Activity Records

Split Subs & Dubs 7" Entitled "Someone Else's Dollar" Out Now With Pretty Activity Label Mates The Subjects

Leaving without saying goodbye is called a "French Exit." Suffice it to say, there has been an interesting cast of characters weaving in and out of the lives of The End of the World's Stefan Marolachakis and Benjamin Smith -- but somehow through 14 bass players and one fistfight, the two of them have been able to stick together, whether it be as best friends or as band mates.

It's a rarity in a city where true friends are hard to come by. Singing drummer Stefan first met guitarist Benjamin in Spanish class nine years ago. The two friends have been writing and recording music together ever since, now better known as the Brooklyn-based band, The End of the World. The duo performed, recorded and self-produced every song on their second full-length, French Exit, as a two-piece in both Montana and Brooklyn. The 11 songs on French Exit (on Flameshovel/Pretty Activity, distributed via Touch & Go) address the growing pains of boys becoming men and transitioning into adulthood, or at least attempting to do so.

"Most of the record is very much about our lives, our friendship and our friends in general," said Benjamin. "It's definitely a growing up, life choices type of record."

Stefan's old school crooner voice underscores an earnestness in his narrative lyrics as he sings about people who have appeared and disappeared from his life. Onstage, he is a captivating storyteller, reflecting on the ins and outs of his life, his loves and his friendships. Meanwhile, Benjamin chimes in with shimmery, yearning guitar strums. The sound is minimalist and stripped down, calling attention to each song's emotion and tone.

“When everything else is removed and it’s just the two of us, there’s a really good line of communication there,” Stefan said about writing the record. “It made it easier to make a record that felt honest and clear. ‘Say what you mean’ was one of our mottoes.”

Their friendship has developed beyond the musical partnership over the years. They're constantly scheming their next New York escapade. They publish an online literary magazine called Take the Handle, inspired by participatory journalism in the spirit of George Plimpton and Hunter S. Thompson. Just like the stories in the band's music, the magazine chronicles the lives of their extended creative circle, including the likes of novelist Nathaniel Rich and bands such as Cursive, Oxford Collapse, The Subjects and Money Mark. They also run Pretty Activity Records, a label that acts as the musical arm of this same community.

French Exit features guest contributions from many of their friends, and the cover art was designed by renowned photographer and Grammy-winner Michael Schmelling.

For their charming live show, they bring along friends Sam Axelrod (ex-Narrator) on bass and Mike Incze on pedal steel and guitar.

The End of the World just released a split 7" with Pretty Activity label mates The Subjects entitled Subs & Dubs 7". It includes The End of the World's "Someone Else's Dollar" from French Exit on one side and The Subjects' "Goldenshire Boogie" on the other side.

At last year’s CMJ Music Festival MTV News ran a segment on the long-standing friendship and good-natured rivalry between the two bands, who have been playing shows together for years.

The End of the World first released a 4-song self-titled EP on Pretty Activity in May 2005. The EP spawned the single, "This Little Theater," which was featured in Jonathan Demme’s remake of The Manchurian Candidate. The Village Voice declared it "the best song to come out of Brooklyn" that year. The band followed up with their debut full-length, You're Making It Come Alive, on Flameshovel/Pretty Activity in October 2006. The album was produced with Bill Skibbe and Jessica Ruffins at Key Club Recording Studios.

Over the years, the End of the World has toured and performed shows with bands like Cursive, MGMT, French Kicks, Maritime, +/-, Bishop Allen, Ambulance LTD, David Vandervelde and Working For a Nuclear Free City.

Rascal Flatts teams up with Raycom Sports for football season

Country music superstars Rascal Flatts will open each Raycom Sports telecast of ACC and SEC football for the 2008 season. The season kicks off this Saturday (August 30) at 12:30pm ET when the Florida Gators host Hawaii. The band, Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney, who have sold over 17 million records, will be featured in the opening video montage to lead into each week’s syndicated game.

Their current single, “Bob That Head,” has specifically been rewritten and recorded for both the ACC and SEC. Rascal Flatts also personalized a greeting to air for each conference.

“We can’t think of anything more fun and exciting than mixing two of our favorites things- music and football,” says LeVox.

“We are extremely excited to have one of the most popular groups in music involved with Raycom Sports football this season,” said Ken Haines, president & CEO of Raycom Sports.
“Rascal Flatts has established themselves as one of the most talented musical groups in the world, and they are just the type of BAND that our fans really love to listen to and watch.”

“Bob That Head,” available on Rascal Flatts album “Still Feels Good,” worked perfectly into an opening sequence. It showcases two of the most exciting entertainment events in the country…a Rascal Flatts concert and an SEC/ACC college football game. The song, with lyrics that detail getting ready for a big event, have been worked into a video montage showing one of the production trucks traveling down the highway as well as the Raycom Sports crew setting up at a football stadium and the Rascal Flatts crew setting up a stage for a concert.

“When you hear “Bob That Head” you feel the wheels churning and know that something exciting is ready to happen” said Raycom Sports producer Dave Barringer, who created the opening sequence. “And working with Rascal Flatts, from the guys and their management to everyone else involved, has been a great experience. Their entire operation really loves college football and they were excited about the idea. They were able to visualize how “Bob That Head” fits into college football and our telecasts.

Rascal Flatts join a star-studded list of performers featured in Raycom football and basketball telecasts over the years, including Brooks & Dunn, Daughtry, Sugarland, Alison Krauss, Chris Brown, Lil’ Mama, T-Pain and Ricky Skaggs.

Since their career launched in 2000, Rascal Flatts has sold over 17 million albums, scored 9 #1 singles and 17 top 10 hits and each of their five albums are multi-platinum sellers. They are the reigning AMA, CMT, ACM and CMA Vocal Group of The Year with two, six, five and five respective consecutive wins. They were honored as the 2008 Academy of Country Music/The Home Depot® Humanitarian Award recipients during the recent ACM Awards show in May. This honor, in part, due to their dedication to raising funds for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where in the past 3 years they have donated 2.2 million dollars, as well as their work on the American Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet board. Rascal Flatts’ highly successful concert tours, “Still Feels Good Tour” and “Bob That Head Tour,” have played to nearly 1.2 million fans in the past year.

Raycom Sports, based in Charlotte, N.C., is one of the leading independent syndicators in the nation. Raycom owns the television rights to ACC basketball and syndicated television rights to ACC football and SEC football and basketball. In addition, Raycom owns events around the country, including the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte and the LPGA Longs Drugs Challenge in San Francisco.

"Repo! The Genetic Opera" opening in November

REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA
Opens November 7th, From Lionsgate

Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman
Produced by Twisted Pictures and Lionsgate
Written by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich
Starring Paul Sorvino, Alexa Vega, Paris Hilton, Anthony Head, Bill Mosely, Ogre, Terrance Zdunich and Sarah Brightman, (cameo by Joan Jett)

In the no-so-distant future, a worldwide epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GENECO, a biotech company that offers organ transplants...for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by THE REPO MAN. By fusing ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and BLADE RUNNER, this futuristic tale of horror modernizes the “rock opera” genre with original music and rich, dark production design.

This rock opera boasts an entirely original soundtrack that blends equal parts goth and punk rock to form an eerie and powerful musical narrative. There is a seven-song “Pre-Surgery Sampler” available NOW at http://www.repo-opera.com/secretdownload/ (passcode: geneco) to give you a sneak peek of what’s to come.

All of the actors performed their own songs, and the music was provided by an all-star lineup that features performances from Richard Patrick (Filter), Steven Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Clown (Slipknot), Ray Luzier (Army of Anyone), Brian Young (David Lee Roth's band), Richard Fortus (Guns & Roses), Sonny Moore (First to Last), David J (Bauhaus/Love & Rockets), Daniel Ash (Love & Rockets), Blasko (Ozzy Osborne), Tommy Clefetus (Rob Zombie's band), Melora Creager (Rasputina). Also lending her voice to the soundtrack is the edgy pop star Poe.

Japanese musician and composer Yoshiki Haysahi (of the legendary rock band X-Japan) co-produced the music with Joe Bishara to create one of the most diverse soundtracks in movie history. The digital version of the soundtrack will be available September 30, 2008. The CD will be made available in mid-October at events, signings and through the film's official website, with a projected wide release in January 2009.

Eels' Mark Oliver Everett's film and book

Tuesday, October 21 at 8pm ET/PT on PBS
www.pbs.org/nova/manyworlds

For most of Mark Oliver Everett's life, things didn't add up. Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives follows Mark, better known as E, the lead singer of the cult band the EELS, across the country as he attempts to understand the fantastic possibility of parallel universes and unravel the story of his troubled family and the father he never really knew-- iconoclastic quantum physicist Hugh Everett III.

The film airs on NOVA, Tuesday, October 21 at 8pm ET/PT on PBS (check local listings).

Scientific American described Hugh Everett as "one of the most important scientists of the 20th century." In 1957, he proposed the controversial Many Worlds Theory, a startling interpretation of quantum mechanics, which makes the astounding prediction that every time we make a decision, a parallel universe splits off from our everyday reality. For many years, Hugh Everett's mind-boggling theory was overlooked. Today, the concept of parallel universes is not only explored by many top physicists, but it also inspired many films, television series, and books, including The Golden Compass, Star Trek, and The Subtle Knife.

In this intelligent and imaginative film, the wry and charismatic Mark takes an emotional journey into his father's life, meeting Hugh's old college friends, colleagues, and admirers, including MIT physicist Max Tegmark, a vocal proponent of Hugh's ideas. It is only by entering the esoteric world of quantum physics that Mark can hope to gain an understanding of, and more importantly, a connection to the father who was a stranger to him.

Though Hugh Everett published his theory of parallel universes over 50 years ago as a Ph.D.student at Princeton University, it remained largely ignored by the scientific community for 20 years. Hugh's hypothesis countered the Copenhagen Interpretation, the most widely accepted view of the many puzzles of quantum physics, developed by Nobel laureate Niels Bohr. At that time, many considered the ambitious 24-year-old extremely naive and arrogant to challenge Bohr, who rivalled Albert Einstein as one of the giants of the physics world.

Through interviews and archival materials, the film conveys how Bohr's disregard of Everett's work devastated the young scientist. Dejected and depressed, he left quantum physics behind and became a defense analyst, conducting classified research for the Pentagon. Later he joined the corporate world, applying mathematical modelling in industry.

The chain-smoking, hard-drinking Hugh Everett died of a heart attack in his Virginia home, long before Mark could appreciate his father's professional triumphs and frustrations.

"My father never, ever said anything to me about his theories. I was in the same house with him for at least 18 years, but he was a total stranger to me. He was in his own parallel universe. He was a physical presence, like the furniture, sitting there jotting down crazy notations at the dining room table night after night. I think he was deeply disappointed that he knew he was a genius but the rest of the world didn't know it."

Mark Everett jokingly admits that he can barely tabulate a restaurant tip, let alone understand his father's complex ideas. While Hugh focused on science, Mark focused on music. He mastered the piano, drums, and guitar and became an accomplished songwriter. In addition to writing material for their award-winning albums, the EELS contributed songs to movie soundtracks, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the three animated Shrek films.

Now in his forties, Mark is the sole surviving member of his family, which he has described as strange and lonely. With an intimate, often quirky style, Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives delves deep into the Everett's family history, including the bouts of mental illness. Mark's father and paternal grandmother both suffered from severe depression, as did his deeply troubled sister.

The making of Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives reintroduced Mark Everett to his father and helped him understand his dreams and disappointments.

"I feel like I know my father a lot better. I feel I understand more of the whole timeline of events. Just talking to all these people who knew him, it feels like he's around now more than ever before."

BOOK
"Things The Grandchildren Should Know"
St. Martin's Press publishes an unflinching and often painfully humorous memoir by the internationally acclaimed lead singer, better known to fans as "E." This gritty and boldly told story reveals some of the darker forces and family tragedies that have shaped E's musical sensibilities and helped his artistic voice emerge. The autobiography has already received advance raves from the likes of Pete Townshend, TIME's Joel Stein, and more. Hits bookstores on the same day, Tuesday, October 21.

Osaru releases debut effort

www.osarumusic.com

Rarely does one come across anything genuinely new in music. All the many genres have been mixed together and blended so much that originality often looks as if it has fallen by the wayside.

This is not the case with Osaru on his debut album, Home. His is a unique vocal style, a one-off musical vision and an out of the ordinary personal story. Unlike many of his musical peers, Osaru has spent years honing his talents before cutting a record, and the maturity shows.
Having learnt African percussion at the age of 8, church organ at 9 and subsequently discovering the joys of the keyboard and bass guitar, Osaru went on to play music in three separate continents. His inspirations coming from the worlds of soul, jazz, R&B, hip hop, reggae and even traditional African music.

Only after such an extensive musical education, and while simultaneously working as a physician in North Carolina, has Osaru decided to share his gifts with the world. Listening to the quality and diversity of Home, you will agree that it was certainly worth the wait.

The album combines hip hop and R&B beats with jazzy instrumentation and even elements of classical music. This all comes together to form a whole that is satisfyingly head-nodding at first, but deeper and more interesting the more you listen.

There is something here for everyone, without the quality ever being compromised. From the dance floor inspired Start the Dancing to the slow, contemplative soul of the title track Home, Osaru is adept at supplying every musical need.

There is music for getting into the groove at the club, in the shape of I Know and Made Up My Mind, and there is also music for those quieter moments – The 'Piano version' of Pretty Lady and '24' spring to mind here. However, most of all, this is music for lovers of great music who do not want to be constrained by the narrow boundaries of genre.

The best news is that this is only the beginning. Although Home has only just hit the shops, Osaru is already working on his next album, which he promises to deliver in the next Year. If it’s anything like this one, it can’t come soon enough.

Home is available now on CD Baby.

INFO: http://www.esotouric.com/noirnovembersampler, 323-223-2767

"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen." -Raymond Chandler, "Red Wind."

In November, as the shadows lengthen and the summer sun gives way to eerie winds, it's easier to imagine the Los Angeles of Raymond Chandler and James M. Cain, a city of stark moral blacks and whites, men in topcoats and fedoras, women whose gorgeous faces hide a litany of sins. Esotouric, the offbeat bus adventure company whose tours explore the hidden Los Angeles celebrates this fall with NOIR NOVEMBER, a five weekend series of dark explorations of the Los Angeles myth, from James M. Cain's early contributions to the noir genre to young Beth Short's heart rending passage from Main Street hustler to iconic L.A. murder victim The Black Dahlia.

Also featured: downtown tales of crime and rascality, high weirdness in Santa Monica, and a chance to escape the family during Thanksgiving weekend on an especially outrageous true crime tour. And as a special offer to passengers looking to steep themselves in the Esotouric mindset, a $135 sampler pack offers $40 off any three of the five Noir November tours.

ABOUT THE TOURS:

THE REAL BLACK DAHLIA (Sat Nov 1):
A guided tour into the hard life of women on the make in postwar Los Angeles, starting at the Biltmore Hotel and following the twin paths of victim Beth Short and ace newspaperwoman Aggie Underwood as they converge on the vacant lot where Beth's severed body was found in January 1947. The L.A. Times says: "This bus tour... has established itself as an L.A. classic."
More info http://www.esotouric.com/blackdahlia

THE BIRTH OF NOIR: JAMES M. CAIN'S SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NIGHTMARE (Sat Nov8):
This vintage-clothing-optional (but not clothing-optional!) edition of the literary tour offered in conjunction with movie listings web site Film Radar explores how New Yorker editor Cain invented the Noir genre in a series of L.A.-inspired short stories, novels and screenplays, including "Mildred Pierce," "Double Indemnity" and "The Postman Always Rings Twice."
More info http://www.esotouric.com/cain

WILD WILD WEST SIDE (Sat Nov 15):
Featuring the weirdest crimes from the annals of Venice and Santa Monica, including a mummified teenage cult priestess, tortured tots in a seaside House of Horrors, LSD-fueled evil spirits, and a murderess who willed herself into a coma rather than face the judge.
More info http://www.esotouric.com/wildwestside

HOTEL HORRORS & MAIN STREET VICE (Sat Nov 22):
Celebrating the worst downtown L.A. has to offer, this double feature tour explores notorious historic happenings in hotels great and modest and the lost world of vice along Main Street, from freak shows to burlesque queens.
More info http://www.esotouric.com/mainhotel

BLOOD & DUMPLINGS (Sat Nov 29):
Thanksgiving weekend criminal and gastronomical excursion into the Eastern San Gabriel Valley, a hotbed of weird behavior, hideous happenings and mad genius sure to make your own family look (almost) normal.
More info http://www.esotouric.com/bnd

Music Menagerie Presents the First Annual Dog & Pony Show

Hosted by Chris Morris from Indie's Watusi Rodeo

In memory of Chris Gaffney:
Letter from Dave Alvin Aug 6, 2008
Dear friends & fans:
I'd like to let you know about a 3 day benefit called the Dog & Pony Show that some close friends and I have put together for this coming Labor Day weekend, Aug 30, 31 and Sept 1.

The past year has been very hard health wise for many members of the California music scene. Four friends/musicians of ours (western soul singer Chris Gaffney, superb guitarist Duane Jarvis, blues diva Candye Kane, psycho-billy hot-rodder Drac Conley) were all diagnosed with different forms of cancer and need our help to deal with the expense of their various treatments. Instead of putting on four different benefits, I thought it might make more sense to do one BIG one featuring many of the bands and musicians that have played with Chris, Duane, Candye and Drac through the years. Thus, the Dog And Pony Show was born.

Seeing how my late friend (and spiritual advisor), Chris Gaffney, always referred our gigs together as "dog and pony shows," I thought that his descriptive phrase would be a perfect name for the benefit (though he never did tell me which one of us was the dog and which one was the pony). Sadly, as many of you may know, Chris passed away recently but the good news is that Duane, Candye and Drac are doing fine and hanging tough through this rough time.

Without going into a long dissertation on the state of health care in our country, I would like to point out that they still need financial help with their treatments and recoveries. All the money we raiseat the Dog And Pony Show will be going directly to them (or in Chris's case, to his survivors) to cover their medical expenses.

If you are in California this Labor Day weekend, or even remotely nearby, I'd like to personally invite you to come to the shows. There will be great music, art, drinks, dancing, barbeque, some memories, some laughs, a couple of tears and a roomful of love. I'll see you there.

The Sin City Social Club is a renegade collective of musicians, fans, artists and industry executives brought together by shared appreciation of the art and culture that blur the lines between classic, outlaw & alt. country, punk rock, Americana and indie singer songwriters. We turn fans around the globe onto the music and art we love thru our Sin City Social Club cd Samplers, live events, In flight audio programming and thru our home away from home on the internet.

** Wherever you are, Sin City is a state of mind! **
