Support local music with Sierra Madre Sue

My friends and I have been frequenting the AMERICAN LEGION - POST 280 IN EAST PASADENA for the last 2-3 years, since our pal Chief started taking us there after Sunday softball. As a Veteran of the Vietnam War, he joined many years ago, and can take guests in anytime. You may also join the Legion for a small annual fee if your parent or spouse served in the military.
I used to think we were a nuisance to their mostly senior citizen crowd of regulars, but realized they need new, younger members to keep their doors open. And when they discovered our ties to the Doo Dah Parade and some of Pasadena's most popular bands, they saw the potential for successful fundraisers that would reach a whole new audience.
The Ladies Auxiliary is having such an event this SATURDAY, MAY 2nd, featuring live music from HORSES ON ASTROTURF. A fabulous Hawaiian chicken dinner will be served from 6 to 8pm, and the band starts at 8:30. You can enjoy all of the above for just $8, or skip the dinner and pay only $5. 100% of the profits go to "Operation Mend" who provide reconstructive surgery to maimed soldiers; a very worthy cause.
Pictured with me here is Doug Monroe, Legion Post Commander and newest member of our motley softball crew!

Kristeen Young on tour

New York's KRISTEEN YOUNG has always wanted to squash the "nice" and "safe" connotation that comes with piano-based music and stomp on it. With the release of the new album Music for Strippers, Hookers, and the Odd On-Looker planned for later this year, she just might get her wish.

"I wanted to create a new sound for piano on this album, and for it to be just as powerful and creative as any guitar-based record," says KRISTEEN YOUNG's not-so-coincidentally named frontwoman, Kristeen Young. "I wanted it to sound like a wall of pianos, but like the wall in the film, Caligula: a wall that moves and decapitates everyone."

The decapitating wall that is KRISTEEN YOUNG will be moving across the country this Spring in anticipation to the duo’s sixth studio album.

KRISTEEN YOUNG gears up for a national tour, which kicks off tonight in Southgate, MI (tour dates below), after being out on the road over the last two years on high-profile tours with Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (who plays percussion on the new record) and Morrissey (who is not only a fan, but also once signed her to his Attack! label).

Joined by bandmate/drummer “Baby” Jef White and with crisp and full in-your-face production from the venerable Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T. Rex, Morrissey), Music for Strippers... is a mighty big nail in the coffin of "respectable" piano music. Matching the drama and emotion from her viscerally heart-gripping lyrics, the songs of this album celebrate the highs and the lows of the ofttimes unsettling stories that she unfolds.

"For the first time in my life, someone was very giving and loving toward me in a very obvious and public way," she explains. "It softened my heart a bit. And then, when things went the other way, it destroyed me. I'm better and stronger now. But, during the year it took me to recover, I made this record and it represents the arc of that time. Alot of the songs are about the audience, too, as we were on tour, solidly, for about two years."

Among the many surprises on the upcoming album is a duet with Fall Out Boy's Patrick Vaughan Stump.

"I love Fall Out Boy," she attests. "They have such heartbreaking melodies. 'Sugar, We're Going Down' is one of the best rock songs ever written. Patrick's voice is flexible, full of emotion, and has that indescribable tone or quality that just moves you. I think our voices caress and smack each other in all the right ways."

Music for Strippers, Hookers, and the Odd On-Looker will be released later this year.

Unfiltered Records joins with Warner and Postmarks to release new album

New York indie label Unfiltered Records has specialized in unadulterated alternative pop since their first release by Brookville in 2003. Unfiltered was initially a label oriented around releasing musician/producer Andy Chase's own circle of projects including the entire catalog of his critically acclaimed group, Ivy.

The label has also released two albums by Chase's other band, Brookville and Paco, the side project of Ivy's singer Dominique Durand. The label quickly gained traction and began to carve a niche for itself in the world of "moody dream pop."

The Unfiltered artist roster also includes the critically acclaimed debut album from The Postmarks (who spent 5 weeks in the CMJ Top 20) and Brooklyn via New Zealand's The Grey Race.

As a producer, Andy Chase has enjoyed success with the French pop group Tahiti 80, whose debut album "Puzzle" was a critical and commercial hit around the world. Chase also co-owns Stratosphere Sound recording studio in NYC with former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and Ivy band mate (also in Fountains Of Wayne) Adam Schlesinger.

Stratosphere, a fully-equipped 24 track facility built around a classic Neve console, has quickly become one of the premier "go to" studios in NYC. Unfiltered has recruited Michael Galbe as General Manager. Galbe, who will be handling day to day operations, is joining Unfiltered Records from MTV Networks where he served as Vice President of Music and Talent. Prior to his time at MTV, he spent 9 years as an international marketing executive at Jive Records.

Unfiltered will christen the new partnership with the release of The Postmarks Memoirs At the End of the World on 08/18/09 followed by Brookville’s third album Broken Lights in September. Unfiltered also recently signed Ukrainian/New York ingĂ©nue, Lana Mir. Her blend of vintage tinged alternative pop has elements of Feist, Nouvelle Vague, Sade and even Billie Holiday. Look for her debut EP this September featuring a cover of the Stone Roses classic "I Wanna Be Adored." 2010 will bring a full length from Lana Mir as well as a brand new Ivy album.

The Postmarks new record comes on the heels of their critically acclaimed 2007 debut and well received 2008 covers album By The Numbers. Pitchfork raved that "The Postmarks self-titled debut may prove to be one of 2007's most sublime pop albums." and Rolling Stone added that The Postmarks "mines the same vein of indie folk popularized by Camera Obscura and Belle and Sebastian."

The Miami trio fronted by the sultry indie-songstress Tim Vehezkely is currently putting the finishing touches on Memoirs At The End of the World at Chase's Stratosphere Sound in NYC. The Postmarks plan to tour extensively this summer behind their new record. Summer tour info to be announced in the near future.

Swine Flu no risk to cats and dogs

The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that the recent human “Swine Flu” outbreak, thought to have originated in Mexico, appears to present little risk of infecting cats and dogs.

To date, only humans have been affected by the new A/H1N1 virus, and it is unknown whether the virus will impact other animals. Although the virus is being termed “swine flu,” researchers have not confirmed that this new strain evolved in pigs and are working to determine more about its origins.

“At this time there is no data demonstrating any risk of dogs and cats contracting this strain of the virus,” says Dr. Louise Murray, the Director of Medicine at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Hospital in New York City. “However, owners of pet pigs, as well as farmers, should monitor their animals’ health more closely during this outbreak. Steps to limit possible transmission from humans to pigs and vice versa are recommended.”

Owners of Vietnamese potbellies, African pygmies and other pet pigs should be aware that there are Influenza type A vaccines available and recommended for healthy swine.

The ASPCA also recommends keeping pet pigs and swine farms isolated from any public exposure that might put them at risk for illness. The American Association of Swine Veterinarians suggests that visitors should not be allowed into swine production units, and for humans to avoid unnecessary contact with pigs. Because there are many causes of illness in pigs, if your pet pig is unwell, it is recommended to consult with your veterinarian.

Dr. Miranda Spindel, Director of ASPCA Veterinary Outreach adds, "Swine influenza or swine flu is caused by infection with Influenza A viruses and is one of the leading causes of respiratory disease in swine throughout the world. Like most Influenza A viruses, swine flu generally causes high levels of illness in pigs, but fatalities are uncommon. Although people do not normally contract swine influenza, humans have become infected when in contact with infected pigs or contaminated environments. Normally, human-to-human transmission of swine flu is temporary. However, as outbreaks have occurred in the past, swine flu is recognized for its potential to cause public health concern."

The ability of any virus to cross species barriers and sustain transmission is dependent on many factors and occurs infrequently. Like all influenza viruses, swine flu viruses change constantly. Swine are unique in that they are able to host both avian and mammalian influenza viruses. It has been suggested that pigs can act as a reservoir, allowing avian influenza to adapt to mammalian species, and for influenza viruses to undergo genetic changes, emerging as entirely new and different viruses. When these new, mixed/mutated viruses appear, there is potential for humans to become infected and transmit the new virus among other people. The form of influenza that appears to have originated recently in Mexico is a never-before-seen genetic mixture of type A Influenza viruses originating in pigs, birds and people.

For more information about swine flu and updated information on prevention, the ASPCA recommends the following organizations the Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu), the American Veterinary Medical Association (http://www.avma.org/public_health/influenza/swine/swine_flu_faq.asp ) and the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/csr/don/en/ ), among other agencies, are coordinating guidance and updates on the evolving situation with swine flu.

BMI announces Woody Guthrie Fellowship award winners

The winners of the fourth annual Woody Guthrie Fellowship have been announced by Ralph N. Jackson, President of the BMI Foundation, Inc., and Nora Guthrie, Executive Director of the Woody Guthrie Archives (WGA) and Foundation. The program funds research fellowships for scholars to use the rich and extensive holdings available at the WGA in New York City.
The 2009 recipients are as follows:

Dr. Martin Butler is Assistant Professor for the Chair of North American Literature and Culture, and for the Chair of British and Anglophone Literature and Cultures at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. His 2007 dissertation, Voices of the Down and Out: The Dust Bowl Migration and the Great Depression in the Songs of Woody Guthrie was awarded “Best Dissertation in the Humanities in 2008 at the University of Duisburg-Essen” by Sparkasse in Essen. His current project, I’m Here in Buchenwald, My Number’s on My Skin, seeks to examine German fascism in the songs and writings of Woody Guthrie. Butler’s research at the Archives will result in a chapter in a forthcoming collection of essays on Woody Guthrie.

Dr. Darryl Holter, Adjunct Associate Professor in the History department at the University of Southern California, is the author of more than a dozen books and scholarly articles on labor history in America, many focusing specifically upon union efforts, labor law, and workers. His current project, Woody Guthrie in Los Angeles, 1937-1941, will build upon Holter’s foundational knowledge of the region, as well as his solid background in social and labor history. An active musician, Holter brings an appreciation and understanding of folk music to complement his strong academic background, culminating in research that will explore this oft-overlooked period in Guthrie’s life, offering insight into the importance of the Los Angeles years on the formation of Guthrie’s music and politics.

Dr. Mark Allan Jackson is Assistant Professor of Folklore and English at Middle Tennessee State University. His 2007 book Prophet Singer: The Voice and Vision of Woody Guthrie, was recently awarded “Outstanding Academic Title: by the American Library Association’s Choice Magazine. Jackson’s current project, Playing Legend Maker: Woody Guthrie’s “Jackhammer John,” will explore how Guthrie drew upon the folksong tradition to help him craft legendary figures. His research will result in an essay to be included in an upcoming collection of scholarly work on Guthrie.

Matthew Sutton is a Ph.D candidate in American Studies at the College of William and Mary, where he is working towards a dissertation entitled “Storyville: Discourses in Southern Musicians’ Autobiographies.” Sutton’s current project, Green Pastures of Plenty, builds upon his earlier work to explore Guthrie’s notions of environmental preservation. Sutton’s research will further examine drafts of Guthrie’s semi-autobiographical manuscripts in detail in an attempt to better understand the scale of Guthrie’s sense of environmentalism.

Established in 1972, the Woody Guthrie Foundation is a non-profit organization that serves as administrator and caretaker of the Woody Guthrie Archives. Dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of information about Woody Guthrie's vast cultural legacy, the WGA houses the largest collection of Woody Guthrie material in the world. Since it's opening in 1996, the Woody Guthrie Archives has been a major success and has become an important resource for the general public, musicians, singers, songwriters, scholars, and public and private cultural institutions wishing to access the research collection.

The BMI Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 1985 to support the creation, performance and study of music through awards, scholarships, commissions and grants. Tax-deductible donations to the Foundation come primarily from songwriters, composers and publishers, BMI employees and members of the public with a special interest in music. Because both the Foundation staff and the distinguished members of the Advisory Panel serve without compensation, more than 95% of all donations and income are used for charitable grants.

The Hooters' new double CD due out in July

The Hooters are poised to dominate the summer 2009 live-music scene with the release of their first internationally available double-live CD. Both Sides Live will be available for sale in the US on July 21st, 2009 with distribution by Megaforce. Internationally, the CD will be released this week.

Since last years critically acclaimed release, Time Stands Still, demand for more music from this well loved band remains high. This new collection, Both Sides Live, creatively combined the demand for a new release, the penchant to hear some of the old songs and the fans enthusiastic appetite for high-end live recordings both acoustic and electric. Both Sides Live offers inspired live performances of The Hooters best known songs including break-through tracks, ‘And We Danced’, ‘The Boys of Summer’, ‘All You Zombies’ and ‘I’m Alive.’

“Recording these shows was a labor of love, as they say,” comments Eric Bazilian, “We loved doing both sets, showcasing all of the many layers of the Hooters and really, both experiences were so different. The acoustic set was such an intimate experience with the fans, very emotional and the electric set was just so much fun. I think fans are going to love both CDs played right next to each other!”

“Our friend, violinist Ann Marie Calhoun, came down to play with us and it just added another dimension to what we were trying to accomplish with the shows. The Hooters have always been about great songwriting, great live performances and lots of surprises and Both Sides Live delivers on all fronts.” Adds Rob Hyman.

Produced by Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman, with technical assistance from Rick Chertoff and Paul Hammond, Both Sides Live showcases the band’s heart-of-a-nation charisma and is a side-by-side presentation of The Hooters live onstage, and live in an intimate studio setting. The release of Both Sides Live will see the band take hold of old and new fans alike.

Upon opening the CD, fans will be happy to see the two discs sitting side by side:

Disc One, ‘The Electric Factory’ captures the joyful energy of the band’s two sold-out shows, at Philadelphia’s legendary Electric Factory. Introduced to the crowd by Philly’s own beloved DJ, WMMR’s Pierre Robert, as ‘musical treasures’ and ‘roving ambassadors’, the band treats the crowd to high-energy sets of its best-known songs.

Disc Two, ‘The Secret Sessions (Acoustic)’ captures a moment in time, the band gathered in the studio to record an intimate acoustic concert, as an overview of their music, for a few close friends and associates. Michael Tearson of Sirius Radio describes the feeling of this special live studio performance as ‘warm, exhilarating and downright excellent’.

Both Sides Live boasts the dense, musically adventurous sound that has made The Hooters a staple of the east-coast rock scene. The Hooters create a style of music that can withstand the passage of time and maintains its relevancy through the sheer simplicity of superior craftsmanship.

With the emphasis on the juxtaposition of the live vs. the acoustic, Both Sides Live is a nostalgic shot through the heart. Iconic tracks such as ‘And We Danced’, and ‘The Boys of Summer’ are spirited pop excursions, and the musical gem ‘‘All You Zombies’ brings listeners back to the summer of 1985 when the band first performed the song for thousands of fans at the historic Philadelphia LIVE AID Concert.

The release of Both Sides Live will lay the groundwork for a string of tour dates, both in the US and across parts of Europe. The Hooters On Tour will include the sixth annual open-air concert at Heide-Park in Soltau, Germany on September 5th, 2009. Additional US tour markets will be announced soon.

About The Hooters:
Origin of a name: The distinctive sound that plays throughout is the Melodica, a combination keyboard/harmonica instrument the band called a "Hooter".

As Both Sides Live is poised to be released, The Hooters can celebrate a rich musical history:
The Hooters released five studio albums between 1983 and 1993, a live album in 1994, and retrospective collections in 1996 and 2001. In addition, numerous other collections of live recordings and bootlegs were released in the U.S. and Europe. Their first studio album in 14 years ‘Time Stand Still’ was released in 2008 to critical and popular acclaim. Both Sides Live is set for a July 21, 2009 US release date.

Bursting onto the Philadelphia music scene, The Hooters can lay claim to a deep and varied musical career including a string of hits, legions of fans, countless high-profile live performances and a list of songwriting collaborations that reads like a who’s-who of rock royalty.
Rolling Stone magazine has recognized the Hooters as the "Best New Band of the Year" 1985, and David Fricke said, "The Hooters have made airwave magic with unconventional ingredients".

In addition to their work with The Hooters, founding members Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian have written and produced songs for many artists, including Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, Ricky Martin, Dar Williams and Jon Bon Jovi to name a few.

Rob Hyman and Cyndi Lauper co-wrote her hit song "Time After Time" which received the 1984 Grammy nomination for Song Of the Year. Eric Bazilian’s masterfully penned "One Of Us", written specifically for Joan Osborne, received the 1996 Grammy nomination for Song Of the Year. In the year 2000, the Hooters were honored to have Ricky Martin cover the English version of "Private Emotion" on his Grammy nominated debut CD.

Check out Machines of Grace

Meet Machines of Grace. They are the latest among the gifted hard rock/heavy metal bands born from Boston’s thriving music scene. As with their Beantown bred forefathers, (Aerosmith, Extreme, Godsmack, Dropkick Murphys) Zak Stevens (lead vocals), Jeff Plate (drums), Matt Leff (guitar) and Chris Rapoza (bass) have concocted their own proprietary formula for whiplash on a disc. Top shelf status comes from the experience of successfully headlining major tours and support from a monumental fan base.

Drummer Jeff (Trans Siberian Orchestra, Savatage, Metal Church) Plate and lead singer Zak (Circle II Circle, Savatage) Stevens have the resume to help catapult Machines of Grace into the monsters of rock realm.

The divine mix of such magnanimous talent can convert even the most stubborn music critic. Why? The method to their madness is embedded in the music…

“It’s just a pure, solid melodic rock sound,” offers Stevens. “It has infectious grooves and its own brand of outright power. To me, it’s got great songwriting with a hard rock edge and strong commercial appeal.”

The rise of the ‘Machine’ had to start somewhere… Leff and Stevens have a lengthy history, spanning back to their days as protĂ©gĂ©s at GIT/VIT respectively. Their first band, Wickedwitch, also introduced the talents of drummer Jeff Plate, who clinched the line-up and formed the backbone of today’s brainchild: Machines of Grace. During a considerable hiatus after the demise of the Wickedwitch project, Zak Stevens had gone on to front Savatage (and more recently, Circle II Circle), and later recruited Jeff Plate, who performs regularly with the Trans Siberian Orchestra and Metal Church.

Meanwhile, Matt Leff had formed Trigger Effect, and with bassist Chris Rapoza, had toured as an opening act for Iron Maiden, Queensryche and Rob Halford.

Time had clearly hit the afterburners. Call it chemistry, fate or pure coincidence. A Wickedwitch fan suggested that the founding members revise, rethink, record and release the original material, and voila - Machines of Grace was conceived.

This band accords a shot of rock and roll that infuses several music genres with an innovative twist of smoldering vocals and bludgeoning guitar riffs. Blend that with an explosive rhythm section and you’ve got an exceptionally powerful elixir.

“I’d say we’re a mix of melodic metal, hard rock, modern rock and acoustic rock,” explains guitarist Matt Leff. “The current rock climate is calling for modern production, strong vocal melodies and memorable songs from guys that can really play. I think we fit that description.”

Bassist Chris Rapoza agrees: “The CD has an amazing vibe that just flows really well and makes you want to listen to it all the way through. To me, song writing and recording with that same quality always makes for the best type of album.”

Jeff Plate tops off the sentiment: “The music is metal, but not thrash. Rock, but not pop. We could be compared to a number of different bands, and each song will give you a different impression, but in the end the sound is distinctly Machines of Grace.”

That sound is likewise attributed to the talents of veteran mixologist Paul David Hager. Credited with engineering, mixing and producing studio work by acts such as The Goo Goo Dolls, Avril Lavigne, Pink and Tracy Bonham, Hager brings to the table a record destined for the spotlight, and plenty of industry accolades.

Live, this band brings new meaning to the term full throttle. The killer studio version of the music not withstanding, Machines of Grace takes a live performance experience to a whole new level. Fans will really enjoy the dueling guitar and vocal arrangements, while the second-to-none rhythm section welds them together perfectly.

Zak promises, “You’ll hear the emphasis on the album, the way the mix very closely depicts how this band actually sounds when we plug in.”

How many bands these days can do that? Look for the debut, self-tilted Machines of Grace CD this summer.

William Elliott Whitmore is on tour

Forget auto-tune, background singers and flashy stage production. The real test of a true talent is to get in front of a live audience (not to mention hundreds of thousands of television viewers) with nothing but your own voice, an acoustic guitar and a boot heel for percussion, which is exactly what William Elliott Whitmore did when he recently appeared on the long running and wildly popular UK music program "Later...with Jools Holland" to perform "Old Devils" off his ANTI- Records debut Animals in the Dark. And, as they say, the crowd went wild.

Will took a few weeks off after a full European tour, and sets out again tomorrow for a headlining US tour with eclectic, operatic indie rockers Fake Problems and indie-folk outfit Frontier Ruckus.

Animals in the Dark came out in February to wide acclaim. Jonathan Zwickel at the Seattle Times wrote "you hear the diesel engine growl of his voice, the century of blues and folk tradition behind his banjo-driven stomps, the everyday relevance of his lyrics, and you succumb."

Straddling the punk world where he cut his teeth and the Americana folk scene that has embraced him, Will Whitmore's honesty and sincerity cuts a wide swath of appeal, a refreshing voice in a world filled with lip synchers and computer-augmented skills.

May 8th - Room 5 ( Los Angeles ) - Solo Set

WHO IS KENNETH PATTENGALE
Kenneth Pattengale works outside-or at least on the fringes-of what the music industry might traditionally call its own. Over the last eight years, Pattengale has taken inspiration from the career paths of artists like Randy Newman, Elvis Costello and personal hero Joe Henry by exploring what it means to wear the differing hats of film composer, record producer and performing songwriter.

The music called into question is hard to classify. It runs the gamut from swamp music to rhythm & blues, lullaby to country & western, folk song to piano ballad and beyond. The songs take direction from the stories they tell, not necessarily held together by a clear musical style but by the authenticity with which the stories are told.

Along with the artists that Pattengale looks towards for career inspiration, he hopes to follow Tom Waits, Gillian Welch, Chris Smither and Loudon Wainwright in their ability to conjure a unique American voice by transforming emotional experience into narrative.

Beginning with Downtown LA in 2001, Pattengale has independently released five full-length albums of original material. He has just finished recording a new collection of material entitled Storied Places, the first to see a departure from Pattengale's own label Four Six Productions.

The record is to be released on January 27, 2009 by Milan Records (Ryko/WEA distributed). Pattengale spent 12 weeks at the beginning of 2007 writing and recording what would become the score for the German animated film Die Drei Rauber, which was produced by Tom Tykwer's production company X-Filme. Shortly after, he started to perform his own material for live audiences in Los Angeles.

"I hadn't played live for almost four years. I was always scared of not having enough control over the performance environment, or lacking the textures only available in the studio. In many ways, working on the film-being collaborative in nature-forced a re-evaluation. It made me yearn to make a connection with people beyond what the recordings alone have to offer."

He continues to perform live sets of original material often in his native Los Angeles. In addition to countless short films, two features and five albums, Pattengale has produced records for a varied group of artists, from hardcore sensation From First to Last for major label Interscope to rootsy Americana newcomers Matt Taylor and his Laurels for Pattengale's own indie imprint. It's the balance between the three arenas Pattengale works within that drives his career.

He explains, "Upon seeking advice from a hero of mine, I was urged to simply do the work that lay in front of me. I've found a tremendous personal and emotional success in following that advice-putting myself in situations that reward a hard work ethic and a healthy imagination but, above all, a commitment to honesty in your work."

Pattengale is, as he puts it, a "ripe but withered twenty-six years old," holds a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Southern California and "fights [himself] for elbow room among stacks of books, scraps, instruments & computers" in Los Angeles, California.

Flying Fish Festival at Catalina Island May 28-31

In celebration of the annual return of Catalina Island's famous flying fish, Catalina announces the 2nd Annual Flying Fish Festival, May 28th - May 31st, a four day festival of family fun on California's only island resort destination.

From May to September every year, Catalina Island welcomes the famed flying fish. This spectacular fish soars out of the water at heights of up to 30 feet and glides for distances as long as ¼ mile. The flying fish visit the Island for only a few months a year and best shows itself at night when lured with lights. It is only fitting that Catalina celebrates their arrival by honoring them as special guests with a four day long weekend of festivities.

The Flying Fish Festival kicks off on May 28th, a Thursday night, with the Taste Around of Avalon. It's a chance to explore some of Avalon's finest eateries and taste their most delectable menu items - all in one night! Activities are plentiful throughout the rest of the weekend as the events and entertainment roll out to celebrate the fantastic flying fish.

This year's Flying Fish Festival includes the 80th anniversary celebration of the iconic Casino Building. A Saturday evening concert in the Casino Ballroom will commemorate the architectural wonder, completed in May of 1929. The Good Vibrations will be playing as a tribute to the Beach Boys. Tickets will be $19.29 to commemorate the opening year date and will include a piece of birthday cake.

Other events for the four day festival include evening Flying Fish Boat Tours aboard the Blanche W, a street fair and beer garden, a professional sand sculpture creation, free musical and theatrical entertainment, family kayak relay races, live marine touch tanks, garden tours, beach bingo, various ocean craft activities for kids, a Flying Fish Parade, Gil, the Flying Fish and Much More!

Catalina Island, with its Mediterranean charm and crystal clear waters, is located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California and can be reached in less than one hour by boat or 15 minutes by air. For additional information about Catalina Island, including special events, accommodations, attractions, and activities, or to receive a free copy of the Catalina Island Vacation Planner, contact the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau at (310) 510-1520 or visit www.CatalinaChamber.com.

With Caroline Rhea featured as lead host, STAND-UP 360 offers seven distinct presentations aimed at a wide variety of audiences. Kicking off in May 2009, STAND-UP 360™ will appear in Screenvision theaters nationwide.

STAND-UP 360™ captures the unmistakable energy of a Live New York comedy show in an unparalleled program, presenting a line-up of top names from headliners to break-out stars. Serving up a new style of entertainment at cinemas, STAND-UP 360™ offers major bang for the buck; it would take months of repeat visits to a variety of comedy venues to experience the calibre and range of talent assembled for the films.

Each film features a diverse roster of acts, while special edition STAND-UP 360: Muy Caliente™ is devoted to Hispanic talent and STAND-UP 360: Inside Out™ is headlined by popular LGBT comics and friends.

With Caroline Rhea as host, STAND-UP 360™ features many of today’s hottest comics including Roz G, Judy Gold, Godfrey, MODI, Poppi Kramer, Wali Collins and many others. Rising Hispanic star Erik Rivera hosts two STAND-UP 360: Muy Caliente™ films with sets from Angelo Lozada, Cristela Alonzo, Sara Contreras and more. Finally, Caroline Rhea hosts STAND-UP 360: Inside Out™ with a line-up of LGBT stand-outs such as Judy Gold, Jackie Hoffman, Frank DeCaro, Jaffe Cohen, Hedda Lettuce and Michele Balan in thought-provoking performances.

The Screenvision Programming Network was launched in 2007 to enable exhibitors to attract additional audiences during off-peak movie timeframes. Screenvision’s presentation of the La Scala opera series, UltraMarathon Man: 50 Marathons • 50 States • 50 Days, Ballet Shoes, its partnership with the New York Mets for Mets at the Movies, the Phillies’ World Series film with Major League Baseball, the Boston Celtics championship season documentary, Return to the Rafters, MSNBC’s coverage of President Obama’s Inauguration and most recently Stevie Wonder’s “Live at Last” concert are examples of previous successes.

“New York comedy clubs are to stand-up comedy what Broadway is to theater – the place to see the absolute best performers,” says producer Bryan Bantry. “Now, we can deliver the experience of a New York club closer to home and at a great price. Seeing live comedy is about who’s at the mic and the energy of the crowd. Bringing the experience to a cinema keeps the audience dynamic an integral part of the mix, while presenting favorite comedians uncensored and without commercial breaks. With discouraging headlines all around us -- we need a laugh, now more than ever. STAND-UP 360™ is designed to be fun, inexpensive and unmatched in terms of its entertainment value.”

Ellot Easton's Tike Gods at the Key Club May 8

Famed The Cars’ guitarist, Elliot Easton debuts Elliot Easton’s Tiki Gods, an Exotica instrumental group featuring some of music’s greatest talents on Friday, May 8, at Key Club. With members from The Brian Wilson Band and The Wondermints, this nine-piece ensemble plans to create waves in the exotica, Tiki music scene. Doors at 9:00 p.m. Ticket price is $10.00 and advance tickets are available at http://www.ticketmaster.com/ or at the Key Club box office (310) 274-5800.

“There isn’t really a word to describe the band’s sound,” explains Easton. “Think martini lounge, space age, Exotica, with lush, romantic themes from Hollywood 60’s movie soundtracks like Pink Panther and James Bond. It’s the hybrid sounds of the Tiki culture and Polynesian dance and a combination of surf rock and instrumental mood music. Most importantly, it’s a very fun kind of music,” he added. “For example, we’ll be playing the theme song from Star Trek.”

The all-star, nine-piece band includes Elliot Easton (lead guitar, vocals), Nick Walusko (guitar), Probyn Gregory (trumpet, percussion), Brett Simons (bass), Nelson Bragg (drums), Todd Jaeger (keyboard), producer Andy Paley (keys, bass), Gary Griffin (keyboard), and Scott Bennett (multi-instrumentalist). Each of these master musicians have played and toured with bands such as The Who, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits, Flaming Lips, Filter, Smashing Pumpkins, Creedence Clearwater Revisited, Todd Rundgren, as well as with The Brian Wilson Band and The Wondermints.

ABOUT ELLIOT
As lead guitarist for the legendary rock band “The Cars” and “The New Cars,” Elliot has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Well respected in the guitar community, Elliot’s reputation is that of a tasteful musician with a knack for coming up with memorable solos, great tones, and an uncanny ear for creating unforgettable “hooks” on pop records. Easton released a solo album in 1985, Change No Change, featuring songs co-written with Jules Shear.
In 1998, Easton's playing was featured on No Cats, an album from bassist Lee Rocker of Stray Cats fame. Easton then joined Creedence Clearwater Revisited, the modern touring version of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Currently, Easton is a member of The New Cars, along with original The Cars member Greg Hawkes, singer/songwriter Todd Rundgren, former Utopia bassist/vocalist Kasim Sulton, and Tubes drummer Prairie Prince.

Roadside Graves release new album

Roadside Graves release My Son’s Home on Autumn Tone Records

Roadside Graves
My Son’s Home
(Autumn Tone Records)
June 09, 2009

My Son's Home s our third full-length record. It was conceived of as an album about soldiers and their complicated struggles to forge identities and relationships in times of war. The idea was inspired by the Bobby Bond song “Six White Horses” and a short John Steinbeck novel entitled The Moon is Down (which we recently learned was also the basis for the film Red Dawn). Other subjects emerged during the writing sessions, and the record slowly evolved into an eighteen-song cycle about the lives of individuals, families, and friends in a variety of familiar settings: the homestead, the battlefield, the country and the city.

The album is populated by familiar faces from American folk and rock songs, ranging from the back-story told in our “Ruby” of the embittered Korean War vet who vows to shoot his wife in Mel Tillis’s “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town”, to the Aesop-like fable of “The Snake and How It Lost It’s Legs”, in which Dear Henry and Dear Liza from the children’s folk song “There’s a Hole in the Bucket” are responsible for the snake’s brutal dismemberment.

There are cops and spiders lurking in the cigarette trees from “The Big Rock Candy Mountain”, and Johnny B. Goode faces a flurry of nightsticks, bringing him back down to his knees.

We found ourselves increasingly influenced by David Milch’s television series Deadwood. Milch's characters are dynamic, in perpetual interaction with one another and the values that shape their community. We wanted our songs to speak to the conflicts- tragic, humorous, absurd- that arise in an individual as one attempts to eke out an authentic existence in the face of the challenges that characterize social life. The songs celebrate and eulogize this process and the costs it exacts on the souls of the characters. They are songs about birth and death , and everything in between.

The basic track recording and mixing took place at Hypersnakes in Sayreville, New Jersey- a modern recording studio sandwiched between a bus depot and a rundown strip club. Listen closely and you might hear our neighbors Biohazard tuning up on the quieter songs. Listen even closer and you might discover the sounds of a gospel group that was warming up on stage while we recorded on the half-broken Steinway piano in the lobby of The State Theater in New Brunswick.

Many of the other tracks were recorded at dawn in attics and basements throughout New Jersey, in towns like Collingswood, Metuchen, Edison, and Pt. Pleasant.

The players were the Roadside Graves- John, Colin, Rich, Mike, Jeremy, and Dave, along with special guests like Fun Machine’s virtuoso keyboardist Johnny Piatkowski on the farfisa and mellotron.

The sound is that of the teetering ramshackle wall of sound, the sparse and tenderly haunted fingerpicked ballad, Irish table chantey, the harmonium soaked funeral march, dark rumbling surf-folk, the ocean floor.

Our goal was to create music for people who love music, in all its many facets and faces.

My Son’s Home traverses a wide landscape of topics and sounds, and it is our hope that it will prove as good of company to our listeners in their lives as it has to us in ours as we wrote and performed it, for it’s yours now.

H20 releases new video

Want to see the shortest video with the most cameo appearances from punk and hardcore legends ever? You are in luck, H2O just finished up a brand new video for the title track on Nothing to Prove.

This new video was filmed all over NYC and Los Angeles, and features appearances from Civ and Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits), Lou Koller and Pete Koller (Sick of It All), Danny Diablo, Chad Gilbert (New Found Glory), Jimmy Gestapo (Murphy’s Law), CM Punk, Scott Vogel (Terror), Roger Miret, Vinnie Stigma, and Mike Gallo (Agnostic Front), Freddy Cricien, Hoya, and Mitts (Madball), John Joseph and Mackie (Cro-Mags), Dannyboy (La Coka Nostra, House of Pain), Paul Delaney (Kill Your Idols, None More Black), Liza Graves, Suzi Homewrecker, Jacqui Valentine, Roxie Darling (Civet), and Rick Jimenez and John Moore (This is Hell). Additionally, the video showcases some of H2O’s biggest fans, best friends, and family.

Check it out now at www.Bridge9.com.

Vocalist Toby Morse said, “We wanted to do a fun, energetic video with the people closest to us. We included our friends who made appearances on Nothing to Prove and sent out MySpace bulletins to invite the fans to be a part of this as well. This video is a great representation of what we are all about and was made in appreciation of the people surrounding us.”

Directed by Joseph Pattisall, the video for Nothing to Prove is a stripped down, guerrilla style video highlighting not H2O, but the people around them who continue to inspire the band.

Joseph said, “I've been a huge H2O fan ever since I saw them open up for Shelter at the old 9:30 club in Washington DC in 1995. After being shooting the ‘What Happened?’ video last year, Toby hit me up wanting to do something more casual, something to ‘give back’ to their friends and fans. Being such a huge, longtime fan of the band, I could not have been more excited to work on this video with them.”

Last year’s release of Nothing to Prove had H2O touring across the world, hitting Europe, the US, and Canada several times over, including co-headlining their first full US tour in years with Bane and a direct support slot with Dropkick Murphys. Still the realest in 2009, H2O will be playing a benefit show in NYC, their last show in New York this year, on June 21st (Father’s Day). Also appearing will be STIGMA, B9 labelmates Cruel Hand, and Turn It Up. More special guests to be announced soon, check out more information on this special show at www.H2OGo.com and www.LarchmontCharterWeHo.org.
